Have you ever heard about Bigfoot? It’s a popular legend about a big, ape-like creature that some people believe lives in the forests of North America.

For many years, people have told stories about seeing Bigfoot or finding huge footprints in muddy areas.

Some believe he is a real animal that no one has ever caught on camera, while others think he is just a story made up to scare friends around a campfire.

Just like the Loch Ness monster, there isn’t any real proof that Bigfoot exists. But that doesn’t stop many people from saying they’ve seen him or trying to find evidence of his existence.

Most stories about Bigfoot, also called Sasquatch, come from the Northwest region of the United States, where this creature is linked to ancient myths of Indigenous cultures.

The name “Sasquatch” comes from the word Sasq’ets, which means “wild man” or “hairy man” in the languages of some First Nations peoples in British Columbia.

How The Legend Started

The Bigfoot legend began in 1884, when the British Colonist newspaper in Canada published a story about a creature that resembled a gorilla. Many similar stories appeared later, but most were thought to be fake.

John Green, the author of the Sasquatch book and a researcher, reported over 1,300 sightings of Bigfoot between the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 1958, a California newspaper, Humboldt Times, reported on the discovery of large, mysterious footprints near Bluff Creek and called the creature “Bigfoot.”

After a magazine article in December 1959 talked about this discovery, people became more interested in Bigfoot.

However, it was later revealed that the footprints were a prank made by a man named Ray Wallace, which his kids admitted after he died in 2002.

By then, Bigfoot had already become a popular figure in movies and stories.

Over the last 50 years, there have been more than 10,000 reported sightings of Bigfoot in the continental U.S. Most people say he is about 8 to 10 feet tall and covered in hair.

Eyewitnesses are the main source of information about Bigfoot, but sometimes people’s memories can be misleading.

Emotions can change how people remember events, and they might come up with ideas about what they think they saw. This can lead to legends like Bigfoot.

The most famous Bigfoot video is from 1967, taken by Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin, known as the “Patterson–Gimlin film.”

It shows a large, hairy creature walking through the woods. While some people argue over whether it’s real, many believe it was a trick and that the creature was just a person in a costume.

But skeptics argue that even with today’s advanced technology, there hasn’t been any clear proof that Bigfoot exists. Everyone has high-quality cameras now, yet no clear videos or bones have been found after years of searching.

Hoaxes make it even harder to tell what is real and what is fake. Many people have admitted to making fake evidence.

For example, Rant Mullens, admitted to crafting large wooden footprints in the 1920s. There have been modern hoaxes, too, such as in 2008, when two men claimed they had found a frozen Bigfoot, but it turned out to be a gorilla costume.

In January 2021, an Oklahoma lawmaker named Justin Humphrey even suggested starting a Bigfoot hunting season to attract tourists. Later that year, Oklahoma tourism officials announced a prize of $2.1 million for anyone who could capture a live Bigfoot.

How about you? What do you think? Is Bigfoot real or just a hoax?
