My teacher and I debated about guns. I was against guns, and he was for guns.

We argued about six points:

1. More than 1,000 school children died in school shootings since 1970.

2. If people have guns, they can protect themselves from burglars or other criminals.

3. Each day twelve children die from gun violence FOR NO REASON, and another thirty-five children are shot and injured in America.

4. People need guns to go hunting for food, like deer or bears. Should those people starve because they can’t hunt any food?

5. Some people fire a gun at their wedding in Egypt and some can die or get injured.

6. Gun factories create many jobs for people. If we close gun factories, many people will lose their jobs and have no money.

After the debate I won five of the debates and he won one debate.

The debate was hot, like fire.

Debate Arguments:

1. More than 1,000 school children died in school shootings since 1970.

  • School shootings don’t happen because of guns. They happen because people aren’t being raised to learn that violence is wrong. Parents should teach their children that violence is wrong.
  • It is not the parents’ fault, because they could be unaware or travelling around the world and not taking care of their children.
  • It is the parents’ fault because every parent should know if his or her child has access to guns. If the parent is too busy or unaware, they should be punished if their child commits a crime.
  • How can they know if their child keeps the weapon (gun, etc.) secretly outside the house and school, like at the park or in the vents of the apartment?

2. If people have guns, they can protect themselves from burglars or other criminals.

  • I think you’re correct, but in many countries the law says that you can’t carry a gun to defend yourself or to kill or injure someone.
  • It is true that owning guns is illegal in many countries, but in the USA, it is important for people to be able to protect their families. If they don’t have guns, they might get robbed or injured by a criminal who has a gun.
  • Yes, it is true and that means we don’t know if guns are good or bad. But let’s jump back to argument number one, some kids do these things because their parents own a gun in their house.
  • If parents have a gun in the house, they should be certain to teach their kids that it is dangerous and that they shouldn’t use it.
  • Nearly half of all parents with a weapon in the home wrongly believe their children don’t know where they hid it, but if they find it they could kill someone, even their parents if they are angry with them.

3. Each day 12 children die from gun violence FOR NO REASON, and another thirty-five children are shot and injured in America.

  • If kids live in a dangerous neighborhood, they should only play in safer areas and always go with their parents or a guardian for safety.
  • What if the place you are talking about is a school, and parents can’t afford to homeschool their kids at home, and can’t go to school with them? Do you say that more than one hundred kids should drop out of school?
  • Once again, this violence is happening because there are no police or teachers watching the students play place. Police and teachers, or parents, should always watch the kids.
  • You mean like a bodyguard? The world doesn’t have enough bodyguards for all these kids around the world.

4. People need guns to go hunting for food, like deer or bears. Should those people starve because they can’t hunt any food?

  • I didn’t mean all guns. Hunters can go hunt at any time, but before they return to their homes, they should return the gun to the pawn shop or the place they rented it from.
  • Many people who need to hunt for food live in the forest, or far away from any city or town. So, they can’t go to a pawn shop, or store whenever they need to hunt.
  • They can buy one, but they must return it or leave it in their house while they’re in town, the city, or at the mall.

5. Some people fire a gun at their wedding in Egypt and some can die or get injured.

  • If people shoot guns at weddings, that means it is a tradition and it is important to them and their family. So, if someone gets injured, they should just be more careful and shoot away from the crowd.
  • But the shot can injure someone or kill someone two miles away. Like there was a teenage girl on the roof and in one second, she was dead on the ground, and another story says that someone was watching the wedding and got shot in her eye, and she is now blind.
  • If guns are dangerous at weddings, just ban them at weddings. It doesn’t mean that people can’t own guns, they just can’t bring them to weddings.
  • But these accidents can happen at any time and anywhere. There is a story that a kid younger than me took a gun to play with it and killed his friends, and another story says while a father was cleaning the gun he shot himself in his leg and died.

6. Gun factories create many jobs for people. If we close gun factories, many people will lose their jobs and have no money.

  • But they wouldn’t have to close, because they can sell weapons to hunters, the government, the FBI, and government secret agencies. However, they must be approved by the government.
