We’re continuing our post about the two most popular gaming consoles. If you haven’t read part 1 yet, you can read it here on Kidznet.
Ahhhhh. The gaming community. So peaceful. So mature. So- (cut to riots, war, and violence).
Picking up right where we left off, the DualShock was a revolutionary controller. While the Nintendo 64 controller had an analog stick, the DualShock had 2. It felt good in the hands and was Sony’s trick up their sleeve.
Nintendo needed something to save them because the 6th generation of consoles was coming and coming fast. In fact, a year after the DualShock was released, the first 6th generation console, the Dreamcast, was made by Sega.
But, Sony continued the beating with the PS one (not the same PlayStation released in ‘94), which was smaller and even had a little screen, making it more portable (but not that portable). But if you thought Nintendo would get a break, BOY, YOU ARE WRONG.
In 1999, Sony announced that they would be making the ps2. Fans had loved the original PlayStation, and Sony knew they could capitalize on Nintendo’s decline.
Nintendo’s first big hit was the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), released in the mid-’80s. It sold over 60 million units and is considered a big success.
The first competition Nintendo got was from Sega, which released the Sega Genesis, and they fought hard with Nintendo’s SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System, wow, so creative!) but eventually lost.
Even with the success of the SNES, it failed to reach the sales of its predecessor, only racking up 49 million sales (still impressive, though). And that’s where Nintendo had its seemingly inevitable beginning of the end.
Anyways, back to the PS2. In 2000, the ps2 was released. And boy, did Sony beat the LIFE and will out of Nintendo.
A year later, Nintendo released the GameCube, a good console but scary competition.
Microsoft had just released the Xbox, which turned out to outsell the GameCube by 3 million units.
Okay, wrapping the sales up, and oh. Oh my gosh. You gotta feel for the Microsoft and Nintendo CEOs, but man Sega is- wait.
Is that a grave with Sega’s logo on it? Ps2 sales: 155 Million. Gamecube sales: 21 million. Xbox sales: 24 million. Dreamcast sales: 9 million. And I wasn’t kidding about that grave.
The Dreamcast would be the last Sega console. Personally, I am a PlayStation fan, but man, did we massacre the other consoles in that gen. I feel for them.
Microsoft lost 4 billion on the Xbox, but it was worth it. They knew that they could get sales, so test over.
Microsoft and Nintendo worked on new consoles to try to hold back the inevitable rise of Sony and maybe surpass them in sales on the way.
Meanwhile, at Sony’s house. (Chug jug with you playing in the background) I FEEL LIKE WE SHOULD LAY BACK AND RELAX BECAUSE THESE SALES ARE AMAZING! WE SHOULD MAKE OUR NEXT CONSOLE MORE EXPENSIVE AND HARDER FOR DEVS TO WORK WITH! |
Okay, that wraps up part 2. I hope you enjoyed this one. I will come out with part 3 soon.
Check out the Part 3 here.
