Patterns are everywhere in nature, and we just need to look closer and observe to see them.

The unique patterns we see in snowflakes, the branches of trees, the veins on leaves, the growth rings of a tree, the spiral leaf arrangements of succulents, the branching of river systems, and the ripples of sand are just some examples of beautiful natural patterns we can find in nature.

We also have a pattern on our skin we tend to overlook—our fingertips. If you look closely at your hands or fingers, you will see unique patterns on the pads of your fingers and thumbs. What’s even more beautiful is that each person’s fingerprints are unique.

So for today, here’s an art challenge where you can draw and show your uniqueness. But instead of using your finger, you will use your hand.

But before that, ensure you have the necessary materials. It’s just simple. All you need is paper (big enough to fit your hand) and a pencil!

For this challenge, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Start by placing your hand on the piece of paper and draw around your hand using a pencil. Your hand can be in any orientation. The initial orientation and your unique hand make every drawing different. Try to hold the pencil like the image shown below holding it near the eraser part instead of your normal hold. Keep it at a 90 degree angle with the paper so you get even lines.

  2. Next, using a regular drawing grip, join the two open parts near the wrist together so the hand drawing is closed at the bottom.

  3. Then, draw around the original line and ensure it’s nice and close, following all the lines and bumps of your hands.

  4. Just keep on doing this until the paper is full!

Here’s a reference photo of the finished drawing:

If you need more help, here’s a full video tutorial on how to do it:

Remember, anyone can join!

To enter, just attach a photo of your art below. The last day you can submit drawings for this challenge is Dec 31, 2023.

I will soon create a separate post to celebrate the winners!

That’s all for now! Thank you! Have a great day, everyone!
