When our story left off, Xavier had just met a little girl named Madison. Of course, Xavier was a bit shaken by the whole “same name as his late sister” thing, but he passed it off as a coincidence. He talked to Madison (Maddi) a little bit more until he heard his aunt come home.

He quickly wrote goodbye to Maddi and ran over to his aunt Helen. Helen had come home early because it was the 3rd anniversary of her sister and her family’s passing.

John yelled at his wife to make dinner faster, and he was apparently starving to death. John was a rather plump man, as Helen had gained weight from stress eating.

Xavier was thin. He looked as if, with a little force, you could snap him like a twig. His uncle John used this to his advantage when Helen whenever wasn’t home.

Poor Xavier was abused and ridiculed by John but was forced to keep his mouth shut around anyone but him and his poker friends ( the only people who saw Xavier being abused).

After dinner, Xavier was sent to his room so Helen and John could watch a (not very child-appropriate) movie. Xavier looked over to his mirror, and luckily, Maddi was still there.

They wrote to each other a lot until Xavier looked glum. Maddi asked what was wrong, and Xavier hesitated before telling her. In his note, he wrote: ” I wish I could be with you all the time, not a worry in the world, not a bruise or cut on my body.”

Xavier started to cry and wrote another note asking how she got trapped in the mirror. Maddi wrote a note: “It was in the car during the crash.”
