Wow! Well, hello there!

Are you wondering, “Why? Why watch/read Bungo Stray Dogs”? “How does the series impact its fans”?

Well! then, here’s my reasoning!

Bungou Sutorei Doggusu (文豪ストレイドッグス), or Bungo Stray Dogs, is originally a manga series written by Japanese author Kafka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa.

The name itself translates to: “literary stray dogs.” This can hint at the series being related to literature in some form, huh? It is a hint to what this article is about!

Let’s get on with it. To put it simply, each character in BSD is based on a real-life author, except for one.

There are others who are not but are still based on something from literature; for example, take the characters Naomi Tanizaki and Jun’ichiro Tanizaki.

Jun’ichiro was a real author, while Naomi was not..she exists as a reference to the real, like Jun’ichiro’s work, “Naomi.”

Does it make sense? here are some authors featured as characters in Bungou Stray Dogs you may have heard of;

-Edgar Allan Poe

-f. Scott Fitzgerald

-Fyodor Dostoevsky

-Osamu Dazai

Now, onward, men!

(I’m so sorry to say that.)

Continuing, aside from the totally cool author fact. EACH character who has a special ability in the manga called ‘skills,’ is based on real books by the authors on whom they’re based.

Examples; ‘the great gatsby’, ‘crime and punishment’, ‘no longer human’, ‘the overcoat’.

Now, you may ask, “How does this impact the band’s fans in any way, Niko?”

Well! The point of Bungo Stray Dogs is to introduce people to authors they may not have heard of.

Kafka Asagiri himself said how he made bungo stray dogs to get people to go and read the original works. That was quite a smart move. Was it not?

Anyhow, Asagiri stated as well that Bungo Stray Dogs is not for people who are ‘good at living,’ in other words, not leading a healthy life, but rather made for those who require such stories as people do oxygen, suggesting an impact on those who engage with it..how thoughtful of Asagiri, hm?

So, whadya say? Give Bungo stray dogs a chance.
