The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France on October 18, 1886. It was designed by a French sculptor named Frederic Bartholdi. The statue depicts Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty. She holds a tabula ansata in her left hand which has Roman numerals inscribed in it. JULY IV MDCCLXXVI: July 4, 1776.
